Tonkatsu – fried pork cutlet
Tonkatsu or simply »Katsu« is the Japanese Wiener Schnitzel. Indeed it was inspired by European recipes during the 19th century and does not differ too much from the European original. The main ingredient of Tonkatsu – meaning pork cutlet – is composed of pork cutlets taken from the fillet or the loin which are rolled in flour, beaten eggs, breadcrumbs and then deep-fried. Salt and pepper is applied before.
On the other hand, Tonkatsu is served with cabbage and miso soup, not with french fries
and typically cut into small pieces so one can eat it with chopsticks.
